Together for the Foundation

We are committed to the Foundation and actively work to achieve its goals

Board of Trustees

Carolin Scharpff-Striebich “I am particularly interested in the mission of making art collections accessible to the public and integrating the valuable cultural heritage of the Ludwig Foundation into the contemporary context. This is an exciting task that fascinates and motivates me. My connection to the Ludwigs: We share a passion for art, similar collecting interests, and the challenges associated with this.”

Dr. Rainer Krause “Art has the power to unite — people, cultures, and continents. Peter and Irene Ludwig created a collection in the best sense of the word: from antiquity to Pop Art, from West to East, from faience to Picasso. Our mission at the Foundation? To create free spaces so that the delicate power of this heritage can continue to unfold.”

Prof. Dr. Ursula Ley “I became acquainted with the Ludwigs through my professional activities as a partner in a large tax and consulting firm and began advising them in 1989. In 1997, at my suggestion, the Foundation for Art and International Understanding GmbH was transformed into the Peter and Irene Ludwig Foundation, and Irene Ludwig appointed me to the Board of Trustees. My main concern is to implement the will of the Ludwigs as founders, which I have experienced in thirteen years of joint work on the Board of Trustees, and to invest the funds profitably but risk-consciously in order to generate the highest possible surpluses for the promotion of culture.”

Hans Ewald Schneider “My commitment to the Peter and Irene Ludwig Foundation is based on the Ludwigs’ vision that culture in its diversity can unite people. This idea is just as relevant and meaningful today as it was in the post-war period. My relationship with Peter and Irene Ludwig, which grew out of my parents’ close association with them, was characterized by great trust and friendship.”

Prof. Matthias Wagner K “For me, being a member of the Board of Trustees of the Peter and Irene Ludwig Foundation is both an honor and an obligation: to think, discuss, act, and enable in the spirit of the founders for the best possible support for the public museums associated with the Ludwig Collection, as well as for the Foundation itself.”

Board of Directors

Dr. Carla Cugini “Managing the Ludwig Foundation is a great task! It is important to achieve as much as possible for the art, the collection, and the museums that cooperate with us, to remain in dialog both internationally and in terms of cultural policy, and to set an example for the future. It is particularly important to me that we do this in a reflective, open manner and in the interest of the common good.”

Chief Executive Officer

Markus Schalla “The Ludwig Foundation has an outstanding position as a cosmopolitan, internationally networked organization. The idea of art as a connecting element between people, institutions, and nations across all social classes is always topical. The Foundation’s special location in the former private residence of the Ludwigs creates a special working atmosphere in which people enjoy working to position the Foundation for the future in the long term.”

Chief Financial Officer

Benjamin Dodenhoff “Every day, I am impressed anew by the quality and diversity of the works of art that we look after. I feel that helping to preserve, research, and expand this unique collection for the future is both a great responsibility and a great fulfillment.”

Research and Projects

Ulrike Gehlen “I have been employed at Haus Ludwig for twenty-six years and had the opportunity to work for Irene Ludwig personally for several years. Despite some changes over the years, there has always been a great sense of cooperation and mutual support within the Foundation team. For me, it is something very special to work in this impressive place with so many special features.”

Household Management, Haus Ludwig

Susann Geiermann “For me, the Foundation’s archives hold great potential for researchers who are looking for the missing piece of a puzzle in order to verify and substantiate their assumptions and research findings with original historical documents — as well as to gain completely new insights and to discover and illuminate new, hitherto unexplored areas of (art) history.”

Research Assistant

Bernd Naleppa “What fascinates and motivates me about my work at the Ludwig Foundation is the appreciation of each individual employee and the promotion of a harmonious and cooperative working atmosphere. In my opinion, these aspects form the basis for the Foundation’s future success.”

Facility Management

Julius Redzinski “I am motivated to support the Foundation in researching its history and promoting the digitization of its archives. I am particularly fascinated by the Ludwigs as important figures in the cultural history of the two Germanies, as well as by their collections. Digitization will provide a deeper insight into their role in the cultural exchange between Western and Eastern Europe. In this way, the Foundation can stimulate research and cooperation on the collections.”

Research Trainee

Corinna Schröder “As a native of Aachen and a long-time employee who knew Irene and Peter Ludwig personally, I feel a special connection to the Ludwig Foundation: It has always fascinated me how intensely the Ludwigs lived for art. I would like to do my part to ensure that the Ludwig Foundation passes on this unconditional passion to future generations.”

Collection Management

Tanja Wessolowski “It is a great privilege for me as an art historian to be able to support the work of the Ludwig Foundation in this unique place on a daily basis. To be able to help keep Haus Ludwig and the collectors’ vision alive is an exciting challenge and a great pleasure for me.”
