Where Your Ideas become Civic Actions (100 Hours Reading The Origins of Totalism), Performance von Tania Bruguera, 7th — 11th February 2024, Hamburger Bahnhof, Berlin

The artist and activist Tania Bruguera is showing her performance Where Your Ideas Become Civic Actions (100 Hours Reading The Origins of Totalitarianism) at Hamburger Bahnhof.

Tania Bruguera’s Where Your Ideas Become Civic Actions (100 Hours Reading The Origins of Totalitarianism)” should take place from 7.2.2024, 7 pm to 11.2.2024, 11 pm — at Hamburger Bahnhof, Berlin.

The collective reading of Hannah Arendt’s The Origins of Totalitarianism” (1951) was scheduled to take place from 7.2.2024, 7 pm to 11.2.2024, 11 pm.

In the early morning of February 11, 2024, Tania Bruguera decided in consultation with the directors of Hamburger Bahnhof to finish the performance. This was due to two incidents the day before, in which a political group spread hate speech and verbally attacked a reader and one of the directors. Sam Bardaouil and Till Fellrath, directors of Hamburger Bahnhof, commented: We respect and fully support the artist’s decision and categorically reject any form of hate speech and violence. We deeply regret that we have to proceed in this way in order to protect the safety of those taking part in the performance. We invite people to reflect on the consequences of disregarding the freedom of art.” We at the Ludwig Foundation fully share this stance. We particularly regret that there was no willingness on the part of the political group to engage in conversation, contrary to the intention of this performance: to enter into an open dialog together.

The European première in Berlin shows the topicality of Arendt’s analyses and the importance of reflecting on central issues of our democratic coexistence.
