Ludwig Forum for International Art, Aachen
Since 1991, a reconverted umbrella factory from the 1920s houses the „Ludwig Forum for International Art“. This municipal museum acts in succession to the former institution, the „Neue Galerie - Sammlung Ludwig“ which opened in Aachen in February 1970. The actitivities of the Ludwig Forum are based on a contract between the Museum, Irene and Peter Ludwig, and the „Ludwig Foundation for Art and International Understanding“. Signed in 1987, this contract stipulates, among other things, that a substantial block of works of contemporary art be made available to the museum on permanent loan.
With the founding of the Ludwig Forum, it was also possible to expand not only upon the permanent collections, but also and especially upon the experimental programme of temporary exhibitions and other cultural events and performances of the „Neue Galerie - Sammlung Ludwig“. Since the inaugural exhibition, entitled „East Art - West Art“, the Ludwig Forum has presented numerous exhibitions and programmes dedicated to contemporary art from around the globe. Artists from Russia, the United States, Mexico, Spain, China, Japan, Korea, Hungary, Bulgaria, Cuba, Great Britain, the Czech Republic and France are frequently guests of the Ludwig Forum, and the list of guests from other countries is constantly increasing. In June 2000, Irene Ludwig made a generous donation of 68 works of international contemporary art (previously on long-term loan) to the City of Aachen for the permanent collection of the Ludwig Forum.
